What actually happens when we cut your lacquer

A cutting engineer explains the lathe, the levels, and the small decisions that turn a playlist into a groove you can actually track.

Before anything gets pressed, it gets cut. This is the step people picture least accurately, so let’s fix that.

The disc isn’t vinyl yet

A lacquer is an aluminium disc coated in about a millimetre of nitrocellulose lacquer, soft enough for a heated stylus to carve into but nowhere near as forgiving as people assume. The cutting head runs at roughly 140 degrees Celsius so the lacquer shaves away cleanly instead of tearing. Cut it too cold and the groove walls come out ragged. Cut it too hot and you’re basically drawing in melted butter.

Levels are a negotiation

Every track fights the same physical limit: louder means wider grooves, and wider grooves mean less playing time per side. This is why a whisper-quiet folk record can happily hold 22 minutes a side, while a bass heavy dance track starts complaining at 15. I check three things before committing a lacquer to the lathe:

  • Bass content, because low frequencies need the widest excursions
  • Overall side length against the target run time
  • Where the loudest moment sits, since it decides the groove pitch for everything around it

Get the pitch wrong early and you either run out of disc before the music ends, or you leave half the lacquer unused looking apologetic.

Mono bass, stereo everything else

Hard panned bass makes a lathe do something unpleasant: it tries to cut a groove that moves the cutting head almost vertically, which is exactly how you get a stylus jumping out of the groove on someone’s turntable at home. So bass under roughly 150Hz gets summed to mono before cutting. Nobody notices this while listening. Everybody would notice a skipping record.

The best cut is the one nobody thinks about, because it just plays.

From lacquer to something that survives contact with a stylus

The cut lacquer itself is far too delicate to press from directly, so it goes off to be electroplated into a metal father, then a mother, then the actual stamper that meets the hot PVC inside the press. Three generations removed from what I cut, and if I’ve done my job the fourth generation, the record on your turntable, still sounds like the decisions I made at the lathe.

Why we still do this by ear as much as by meter

Software will tell you a level is technically safe. It won’t tell you that a particular vocal sibilance is going to sound harsh once it’s tracing through a diamond stylus instead of a speaker cone. That judgement call is still, stubbornly, a human one, made in real time while a disc turns at 33 and a third revolutions per minute and there’s no undo button. I’ve cut somewhere north of four thousand sides here. I still listen to every single one through the monitor speakers before I sign it off, because the two minutes that takes is cheaper than a full run that hisses in the quiet bits.
