Why a small plant

Big plants press five hundred of the same. We press one.

A pressing plant is built for runs: one lacquer, one colour, a pallet of identical copies. Good for a label, useless for the record you actually want, which is the playlist on your phone. So we bought one press, limited ourselves to two colours, and decided every record leaving the building would be the only one of its kind.

The limits are the style. Two colours swirl better than sixteen million, one machine keeps us honest, and about six weeks is what it takes to do it properly.

What you get

Six things a LUMORA record
does that a download can't.

A record that exists once.

The Single and The LP are editions of exactly one, numbered 1/1 in pencil on the inner sleeve. The Box tops out at 50. Nobody else owns your record.

0 identical copies pressed, ever

Two colours, chosen by you.

Eight inks, 21 named pairs, and the option to hand the choice to Priya. Two pucks of hot PVC meet in one squeeze and the swirl is different every time.

Mastered for vinyl, not just cut.

Theo tames the low end and the sibilance, then cuts a lacquer in real time. You approve a reference before anything is plated, so the groove is yours before the wax is.

A reference to approve, every time

One price, nothing hidden.

Mastering, the lacquer cut, a test pressing, a printed sleeve and tracked UK shipping are in the number on the pricing page. No asterisk, no menu of upgrades you did not ask for.

Flat, or pressed again.

A swirl that surprised you is the point. A warp, an off-centre hole, a skip or a non-fill is a defect, and we press it again at our cost, no argument. The rejects live in a crate by the door.

Three people you can email.

June runs the press, Theo cuts the lacquers, Priya picks the colours. The person who replies to your message is the person who will hold your record. Two working days, tops.

How it works

Playlist to platter
in four beats.

The process, minute by minute
  1. Step 1 of 4

    Send us a playlist

Paste a link or a tracklist. We check run times against the format and come back within two working days with a side split.

  2. Step 2 of 4

    We cut the lacquer

Theo masters for vinyl (less low end, tamed sibilance), then cuts a lacquer at 33⅓ or 45 rpm. You approve a reference before anything is plated.

  3. Step 3 of 4

    The press closes

Two pucks of PVC at 160 °C, one from each hopper, meet between stampers for 28 seconds. The swirl is different every time.

  4. Step 4 of 4

    It ships flat

Cooled overnight, trimmed, sleeved by hand, packed in a stiffened mailer. Tracked shipping in the UK and EU; further on request.

The colours

Eight inks.
21 pairs.

Every record is two colours of virgin PVC, one from each hopper. We have named 21 pairs, argued about most of them, and kept six in the house rotation. Pick one, or tell us the mood and let Priya choose.

Before you press

The four questions
everyone asks.

How long does it take?
About six weeks, counted from the day you approve the lacquer reference. The Single is usually a week quicker, The Box a fortnight slower. We tell you the week, not the day, because Bertha has opinions about humidity.
Do I need to own the rights to the music?
You press a personal copy of music you already listen to, one record for your own shelf, and you are responsible for that use. We do not sell copies, we do not keep the lacquer, and we cannot press an edition for resale of music you do not own the rights to. If you are a band pressing your own record, that is exactly what The Box is for.
Can I hear it before it is pressed?
Yes. After the cut, Theo sends a reference of the lacquer so you can hear the side split, the levels and where side A ends. Change your mind then, not after. Nothing is plated until you say so.
What if I do not like the swirl?
Every swirl is different and none can be repeated, so we cannot promise the photo. We can promise your two colours, in roughly the proportions you chose, on a record that plays cleanly. If it does not play cleanly, see the promise above: we press it again.
